Mudjacking Services for Concrete Leveling

Mudjacking Services for Concrete Leveling

Uneven or sunken concrete surfaces can be both hazardous and unsightly. Whether it’s a driveway, sidewalk, patio, or foundation, restoring concrete to its original level is essential for safety, functionality, and curb appeal. One of the most effective methods for addressing these issues is mudjacking – a tried-and-true concrete leveling technique. At Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing, we offer professional mudjacking services throughout St. Louis to help homeowners restore their concrete surfaces quickly and affordably.

What Is Mudjacking?

Mudjacking, also known as slab jacking or concrete lifting, is a cost-effective process used to lift and stabilize sunken concrete slabs. This method involves drilling small holes into the affected concrete and pumping a specialized slurry mixture beneath the slab to raise it back to its original level. The process is widely used for repairing sidewalks, driveways, garage floors, patios, and other concrete surfaces that have settled due to soil erosion, water infiltration, or poor initial compaction.

Common Causes of Concrete Settlement

Concrete can sink or settle over time due to several factors, including:

  • Soil Erosion – Water runoff or plumbing leaks can wash away soil beneath concrete slabs, causing them to sink.
  • Poor Soil Compaction – If the ground beneath a slab was not properly compacted during construction, the concrete may settle unevenly.
  • Freeze-Thaw Cycles – Repeated expansion and contraction of soil due to seasonal weather changes can shift and weaken the ground under concrete.
  • Heavy Loads – Excessive weight, such as vehicles or heavy equipment, can cause slabs to sink over time.

By understanding these underlying issues, our experts at Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing can provide long-term concrete leveling solutions like mudjacking that restore structural integrity and prevent future damage.

How the Mudjacking Process Works

How the Mudjacking Process Works

Mudjacking is a relatively simple and efficient repair technique. Here’s how our team performs the process:

Step 1: Assessing the Damage

Our specialists begin with a thorough inspection to determine the extent of the concrete settlement and whether slab jacking is the best solution.

Step 2: Drilling Access Holes

Small holes (typically 1-2 inches in diameter) are strategically drilled into the affected concrete slab.

Step 3: Pumping the Slurry Mixture

A grout-like slurry, composed of cement, soil, sand, and water, is pumped beneath the slab. As the mixture fills the voids, it gently lifts the concrete back to its original level.

Step 4: Sealing the Holes

Once the slab is properly leveled, the drilled holes are filled with a matching concrete material and smoothed over for a seamless finish.

Step 5: Allowing for Cure Time

The area is ready for light foot traffic immediately and can typically support vehicles within 24 to 48 hours.

Benefits of Mudjacking

This concrete leveling process offers several advantages over complete concrete replacement, making it a preferred choice for homeowners and property managers in St. Louis.

  • Cost-Effective – Mudjacking is significantly cheaper than tearing out and replacing a concrete slab.
  • Quick and Non-Disruptive – Most projects are completed within a few hours, with minimal disturbance to your property.
  • Environmentally Friendly – Reusing existing concrete reduces waste and conserves materials.
  • Prevents Further Damage – By filling voids and stabilizing the slab, mudjacking prevents future shifting and cracking.

When to Consider Alternative Solutions

While mudjacking is a great solution for many applications, there are situations where other concrete leveling methods may be more suitable. If a concrete slab has severe structural damage, large cracks, or is extensively deteriorated, replacement or polyurethane foam injection might be a better option.

At Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing, we assess each case individually to recommend the best repair method for your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mudjacking

How long does mudjacking last?

Mudjacking can last 10 years or more, depending on soil conditions and how well the slab is maintained.

Is mudjacking suitable for all concrete surfaces?

Mudjacking works well for most sunken concrete slabs, including driveways, sidewalks, patios, and garage floors. However, for heavily damaged or crumbling concrete, replacement may be a better option.

How soon can I use my concrete after mudjacking?

Most surfaces can handle foot traffic immediately, with full curing taking 24 to 48 hours before supporting vehicles or heavy loads.

What are the differences between mudjacking and polyurethane foam injection?

Mudjacking uses a cement-based slurry, while polyurethane foam injection involves lightweight, expanding foam. The latter is better for situations requiring minimal weight or where soil conditions are poor.

Can mudjacking fix foundation problems?

While mudjacking can level concrete slabs, foundation repair often requires additional stabilization techniques like foundation piering or underpinning.

My experience with Cornerstone was a few years ago. I had a sump pump completely replaced, an entire basement wall braced and an outside (garage) wall piered. I have not had a problem since the work was done. The workers and the owner, Dale, were at my home when they said they would be. I am pleased with the work that was done and found Dale to be a man of his word. I would not hesitate to recommend Cornerstone.

We were getting ready to close on our house and 1 week before closing a heavy rain came and we had water in our laundry room in the basement. Dale and his crew came out the next day and got started on fixing the issue. They were fantastic and very detailed in explaining what they were going to do. Had it done in their time frame and cleaned everything up. Very professional and excellent service.

After the huge flood, we had July 26, 2022. I finally decided I’d had enough with the flooding issue and contracted Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing to knock out my sliding glass door in my basement and cement the opening to form a solid concrete barrier. I am very satisfied with the end results!! Dale and his workers did a great job, very respectful of the property, very friendly and professional, and cleaned up after the work was completed. It has already come in handy after 27 years of dealing with flooding in my basement and replacing numerous appliances. I can be at peace now not having to worry every time we have a torrential downpour. Please see attached photos of the 2022 flood and the flood event this year in April. Kudos to Dale and his team!!!! 😁
