What Makes an Egress Window Energy-Efficient?

An energy-efficient egress window is designed to minimize heat transfer, keeping your basement warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Here are key factors that contribute to energy efficiency:

1. Insulated Glass

Double- or triple-pane glass with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings reduces heat loss and blocks harmful UV rays that can fade furniture and flooring.

2. Gas-Filled Panes

Windows filled with argon or krypton gas between panes provide additional insulation, improving thermal performance.

3. High-Quality Frames

Vinyl, fiberglass, and composite frames provide superior insulation compared to traditional aluminum frames, which can conduct heat and cold more easily.

4. Weather Stripping and Seals

Properly sealed windows prevent air leaks, reducing drafts and improving indoor comfort.

5. ENERGY STAR Certification

ENERGY STAR-rated egress windows meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and can significantly lower heating and cooling costs.
Benefits of Energy-Efficient Egress Windows

Benefits of Energy-Efficient Egress Windows

Lower Energy Bills

Efficient windows reduce heat loss and gain, cutting down on HVAC usage and lowering utility costs.

Enhanced Comfort

A well-insulated basement remains at a stable temperature, preventing cold drafts in winter and excessive heat in summer.

Increased Home Value

Homebuyers appreciate energy-efficient upgrades, making your property more appealing on the market.

Better Indoor Air Quality

Tightly sealed, well-insulated windows help prevent moisture buildup, reducing the risk of mold and mildew.

Eco-Friendly Solution

Lower energy consumption means reduced carbon emissions, contributing to a greener environment.

Choosing the Right Energy-Efficient Egress Windows

When selecting energy-efficient egress windows, consider the following:

1. Window Material

  • Vinyl: Affordable, durable, and low-maintenance.
  • Fiberglass: Highly energy-efficient and resistant to temperature fluctuations.
  • Wood-Clad: Provides insulation but requires maintenance.
  • Composite: Combines strength and energy efficiency with minimal upkeep.

2. Window Style

  • Casement Windows: Offer a tight seal when closed, maximizing efficiency.
  • Sliding Windows: Easy to use but may have slight air leakage.
  • Double-Hung Windows: Provide ventilation but require high-quality seals for efficiency.

3. Proper Installation

Even the best energy-efficient egress windows won’t perform well if not installed correctly. Professional installation ensures:

  • A tight, weatherproof seal to prevent air leaks.
  • Proper drainage to avoid water infiltration.
  • Compliance with egress window code for safety and accessibility.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Energy-Efficient Egress Windows

Egress window installation should always be handled by experienced professionals. If not, you run the risk of encountering basement egress window installation mistakes like:

  • Poor Insulation Around the Window Frame: Failing to properly insulate around the window frame can lead to drafts and increased energy bills.
  • Improper Sealing: Gaps or weak seals allow air and moisture to enter, reducing energy efficiency and leading to potential water damage.
  • Choosing the Wrong Glass Type: Using single-pane or non-Low-E glass diminishes energy savings and comfort levels.
  • Ignoring Local Building Codes: Not following egress window requirements can result in costly fines or required modifications after installation.
  • DIY Installation Errors: Improper cutting of foundation walls, poor drainage setup, or incorrect sizing can lead to structural issues and decreased energy performance. Hiring professional egress window installers ensures a flawless installation.

Dale and the guys did a fantastic job. We had a significant wall lean, and they made the repair look easy. They walked us through the permit and inspection processes. Their work is quality, and they are easy to work with. Highly recommended.

My experience with Cornerstone was a few years ago. I had a sump pump completely replaced, an entire basement wall braced and an outside (garage) wall piered. I have not had a problem since the work was done. The workers and the owner, Dale, were at my home when they said they would be. I am pleased with the work that was done and found Dale to be a man of his word. I would not hesitate to recommend Cornerstone.

We were getting ready to close on our house and 1 week before closing a heavy rain came and we had water in our laundry room in the basement. Dale and his crew came out the next day and got started on fixing the issue. They were fantastic and very detailed in explaining what they were going to do. Had it done in their time frame and cleaned everything up. Very professional and excellent service.

Quality work from quality folks. I called on a Friday afternoon to get a quote for poly jacking our sidewalk. They came out on a Saturday morning to take a look and got us on their schedule. Quite happy with how the fix looks as well!

After the huge flood, we had July 26, 2022. I finally decided I’d had enough with the flooding issue and contracted Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing to knock out my sliding glass door in my basement and cement the opening to form a solid concrete barrier. I am very satisfied with the end results!! Dale and his workers did a great job, very respectful of the property, very friendly and professional, and cleaned up after the work was completed. It has already come in handy after 27 years of dealing with flooding in my basement and replacing numerous appliances. I can be at peace now not having to worry every time we have a torrential downpour. Please see attached photos of the 2022 flood and the flood event this year in April. Kudos to Dale and his team!!!! 😁
