How Often Do You Need Sump Pump Maintenance?

If you have a basement or crawl space in your St. Louis home, you may also rely on a sump pump to protect your property from flooding and water damage. A well-functioning sump pump is critical in preventing costly repairs, mold growth, and foundation issues in homes with basement water leaks. But just like any mechanical system, your sump pump needs routine care to perform effectively. So, how often do you need sump pump maintenance? Let’s take a closer look.

To learn more or schedule basement waterproofing services in St. Louis, contact our experts today.

Why Sump Pump Maintenance Matters

Routine sump pump maintenance is the key to avoiding unexpected breakdowns during heavy rain or flooding. In the St. Louis area, where spring storms and flash floods are common, your sump pump can be the difference between a dry basement and a major water emergency.

Regular maintenance ensures your pump activates properly, drains water efficiently, and remains free of debris that could clog the system. It also helps identify signs of wear, corrosion, or motor failure before they become costly problems.

Recommended Frequency of Sump Pump Maintenance

Quarterly Visual Inspections

You should visually inspect your sump pump at least once every three months. During your inspection, check the following:

  • Ensure the pump is upright and stable.
  • Confirm the power source is functioning.
  • Examine the discharge pipe for clogs or leaks.
  • Clear away any dirt, silt, or debris in the sump pit.

Biannual Professional Maintenance

We recommend scheduling professional sump pump maintenance with a waterproofing expert like Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing twice a year – ideally in the spring and fall. During these service visits, our trained technicians will:

  • Test the float switch and backup system.
  • Check for unusual noises or vibrations.
  • Clean or replace the pump screen or inlet.
  • Inspect the check valve and discharge line.
  • Ensure the backup battery (if applicable) is charged and working properly.

Annual Deep Cleaning and Testing

Once a year, we advise a full system cleaning and performance test. This includes removing the sump pump from the pit, cleaning all its components, and running a complete system test with water. Annual testing ensures your pump is ready for the next big storm.

Sump Pump Maintenance Schedule

Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Maintenance

Even with a routine schedule, you should watch for signs that your sump pump may require immediate attention:

  • Strange sounds like grinding or rattling
  • Excessive cycling (turning on and off frequently)
  • Continuous operation without water in the pit
  • Foul odors from the sump basin
  • Water pooling around the sump pump or in the basement

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait. Contact Cornerstone right away to schedule an inspection.

The Importance of a Backup System

In addition to regular maintenance, every St. Louis homeowner should consider a sump pump backup system. During a power outage or pump failure, a battery-powered or water-powered backup can continue to keep your basement dry. Routine checks on the backup system are just as important as maintaining the primary pump.

Professional vs. DIY Sump Pump Maintenance

While there are a few basic sump pump tasks you can handle on your own, such as clearing debris or testing the pump with water, most homeowners benefit from professional sump pump maintenance. Our technicians are trained to detect early warning signs, ensure optimal performance, and prevent problems you might overlook. Plus, our services are backed by a life of structure warranty, giving you added peace of mind.

FAQs About Sump Pump Maintenance

How long do sump pumps typically last?

Most sump pumps last between 7 and 10 years. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your pump and help you avoid premature replacement.

What if my sump pump runs constantly?

A constantly running sump pump may signal a stuck float switch, faulty check valve, or excessive groundwater. A professional inspection can pinpoint and correct the issue.

Is sump pump maintenance covered by my homeowner’s insurance?

Generally, maintenance is not covered by insurance. However, many policies do cover damage from sump pump failure, which makes proactive maintenance a wise investment.

Can I test my sump pump myself?

Yes. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and watch to see if the pump activates and discharges water properly. If it doesn’t, contact a professional.

What’s included in Cornerstone’s sump pump maintenance service?

Our service includes a complete inspection of your pump, float switch, check valve, discharge line, and backup system, along with cleaning, testing, and performance evaluation. All work is covered by our life of structure warranty.

Dale and the guys did a fantastic job. We had a significant wall lean, and they made the repair look easy. They walked us through the permit and inspection processes. Their work is quality, and they are easy to work with. Highly recommended.

My experience with Cornerstone was a few years ago. I had a sump pump completely replaced, an entire basement wall braced and an outside (garage) wall piered. I have not had a problem since the work was done. The workers and the owner, Dale, were at my home when they said they would be. I am pleased with the work that was done and found Dale to be a man of his word. I would not hesitate to recommend Cornerstone.

We were getting ready to close on our house and 1 week before closing a heavy rain came and we had water in our laundry room in the basement. Dale and his crew came out the next day and got started on fixing the issue. They were fantastic and very detailed in explaining what they were going to do. Had it done in their time frame and cleaned everything up. Very professional and excellent service.

Quality work from quality folks. I called on a Friday afternoon to get a quote for poly jacking our sidewalk. They came out on a Saturday morning to take a look and got us on their schedule. Quite happy with how the fix looks as well!

After the huge flood, we had July 26, 2022. I finally decided I’d had enough with the flooding issue and contracted Cornerstone Structural Repair & Waterproofing to knock out my sliding glass door in my basement and cement the opening to form a solid concrete barrier. I am very satisfied with the end results!! Dale and his workers did a great job, very respectful of the property, very friendly and professional, and cleaned up after the work was completed. It has already come in handy after 27 years of dealing with flooding in my basement and replacing numerous appliances. I can be at peace now not having to worry every time we have a torrential downpour. Please see attached photos of the 2022 flood and the flood event this year in April. Kudos to Dale and his team!!!! 😁
